A school that began with a mother’s wish...

Wira’s Playroom started for a simple, honest reason. A mother wanted her son to be closer to home.

Wira had been travelling two hours every school day — one hour there, one hour back — to attend a school that understood him. His mother, Sara, looked everywhere in South Jakarta for somewhere closer. There was nowhere.

So she built one.

Why “Playroom,” not “School”?

Sara believes in the power of learning through play.

When a child enjoys learning — and falls in love with it — they keep learning for the rest of their lives. We have seen this in our own children. We want to carry that same spirit here.

Children and families who walk into Wira’s Playroom should not feel intimidated by the idea of school. They should feel excited, curious, and joyful about learning.

Founder

Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo

Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo, known as Sara, learned at 14 weeks of pregnancy that her son Wira would be born with Down syndrome. She and her husband chose to stand beside him and face the challenges together. Wira means warrior, a name that reflects their family’s determination. That journey helped inspire Wira’s Playroom, which she founded with Reshma Wijaya to support Wira and other children with diverse learning needs. Known for championing women’s and children’s issues, Sara has also publicly urged the government to take the protection of people with disabilities seriously, showing that her empathy reaches beyond her own family.

Reshma Wijaya’s commitment to inclusive education began with her daughter, Cheryl, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome. That experience shaped her belief that a child’s diagnosis should never determine the limits of their possibilities. For more than a decade, she has brought together special education, applied behavior analysis, therapeutic play, and child development to support children with diverse learning profiles. As Co-Founder of Wira’s Playroom, she designs the educational framework and core learning systems that make play purposeful. Her approach recognizes each child’s strengths and creates meaningful opportunities for communication, connection, confidence, and growth.
